The map above highlights an article at thinkprogress.com entitled
GOP Governors’ Refusal to Expand Medicaid
Leaves Nearly 4 Million people Without Mental Health Care. The article
opens with the following statement:
”Half of the states in the country have
blocked the Affordable Care Act’s Medicaid expansion denying insurance coverage
to 3.7 million Americans with mental illness and substance abuse conditions,
according to a new report from the American Health Counselors Association
(thinkprogress.org)
While Tea Partied congressional Republicans
continue their pass no meaningful legislation except 54 meaningless “repeal Obamacare”
votes, Tea Partied Republican governors and state lawmakers(?) are
backing them up with barriers to deny affordable health care to constituents in
need?!?!?
Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, Utah
Governor Gary Herbert, Wyoming Governor Matt Mead, South Dakota Governor Dennis
Daugaard, Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman, Kansas Governor Sam Brownback, Oklahoma
Governor Mary Fallin, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon, Alabma Governor Robert J.
Bentley, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett, North Carolina Governor Pat
MCCrory, all represent states where constituents are being denied
affordable health care, Other Tea Partied Republican governors. and state
lawmakers’ affordable health care blockages appear below.
Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal’s
refusal to expand Medicaid is denying affordable health care to 242,000 of his
state’s poorest residents.
Texas Governor Rick Perry and his Tea
Partied state lawmakers{?} are
denying affordable health care coverage to over one million Texans which will
burden Texas taxpayers with millions in emergency room costs.
Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant is leaving 300,000 of his neediest constituents
uninsured.
Georgia Governor Nathan Deal’s
administration is delaying his
responsibility to institute affordable health care for more than 600,000 of the
poorest Georgians by passing the buck to his Tea Partied
lawmakers costing Georgia taxpayers $3 billion through 2022!?!?!?
Alaska Lieutenant Governor Mead Treadwell denied mental health coverage to 25,000 Alaskans
eligible for coverage.
As a result of Ohio Governor John
Kasich’s, Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam’s and Indiana Governor Mike Pence’s refusal to extend affordable health care in their
states, hospitals like the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, Vanderbilt University
Medical Center in Tennessee and Indiana University Health are desperately
seeking cost savings in areas such as cancer treatment, mental health, and
infant care.
The following Tea Partied
Republican Governors made a big deal advocating that mental health services
were a better policy solution than gun control following the Sandy Hook tragedy.
So, guess what they did…
…Maine Governor Paul Lepage blocked
Affordable Health Care Act mental health services for his state.
…North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory issued drastic cuts to his state’s psychiatric
hospitals resulting in the largest decline in any state over the period of 2007
to 2012
---Alaska Lieutenant Governor Mead
Treadwell who attended Sandy Hook
Elementary as a child denied 25,000 Alaskans Medicaid funding for crucial
mental health services.
Hospitals in states where Tea
Partied Governors and state lawmaker(?) denied the expansion of affordable
health care dismissed at least 5,000 employees across the country.
Patients in areas with shuttered
hospitals due to gubernatorial and state lawmakers(?) denial of affordable
health care to constituents must travel as far as 40 miles to get care, causing
delays that result in deadly consequences.
The most heartbreaking and heartless result of Tea
Partied Republican congressional, gubernatorial and state legislated affordable
health care denial is best summarized in research findings by Harvard
University and the City University of New York which concluded…
…without
the Medicaid expansion, individuals will go without checkups, cancer screenings
and treatment for diseases such as diabetes and depression – leading to
thousands of premature and preventable deaths.
