Republican lawmakers hold homeland security hostage while displaying amnesia over their immigrant roots!

Suffering from a severe case of selective amnesia,  immigrant-based Republican lawmakers(?) want to shut down the Department of Homeland Security to push their  bigoted crusade against President Obama and Comprehensive Immigration Reform

There are, currently, only two sitting congressmen who are not descendants of immigrant origins: Tom Cole (Chickasaw Nation, US Representative from Oklahoma and Markwayne Mullin (Cherokee Nation, US Representative from Oklahoma).

Nevertheless, Republican lawmakers(?) continue to, conveniently, forget their immigrant origins at the high price of toying with our nation's security!

First, House Republicans, recently, voted 237-190 to cancel President Obama’s executive order on immigration (See House GOP Doubles Down on Bigotry With Vote to Stop Obama’s Immigration Executive Order link below.)

Then House Republicans refused to extend Department of Homeland Security funding in order to stage a DHS repeat of their, costly,  $2.0 billion October, 2013 government shutdown!

Republican justices are, also,  joining the GOP's anti-immigration crusade. Texas Justice, Andrew Hanen, halted a key component of President Obama's immigration policy two days before it was to go into effect. (See Federal Judge Blocks Obama's Immigration Action link below.)

A huffingtonpost.com article entitled Congress Should Respect Our Great Nation of Immigrants, states the following:

Republican Senator Ted Cruz (TX) - of  Cuban origins -  called on Congress to punish the president by blocking all executive and judicial nominations.

House Republicans Boehner, Cantor, and others - of origins ranging from Germany to Lithuania and beyond- filed a lawsuit over the president’s executive authority even calling for impeachment.

As far as legality and impeachment go, five recent Republican presidents, Eisenhower, Ford, Reagan, Bush 1, and Bus II, totaled 18 executive orders on the matter. (See Impeachable? Here are 18 Immigration Executive Orders Issued by Recent Republican Presidents link below.

President Reagan, alone, granted amnesty for  2.9 million immigrants!

An article at reason.com entitled Why the GOP Congress Should Welcome More Immigrants (Even Illegals!) states the following points:

  • Immigrant businesses employ 1 in 10 Americans
  • 18% of Fortune 500 companies were founded by immigrants, generating $1.7 trillion in revenue
  • 75% of farm workers are foreign-born
  • As consumers, immigrants pump over $2 trillion into the economy
  • Without immigrant labor, milk prices would increase by 61%
  • Immigrants on average pay $1800 more in taxes than they receive in benefits
  • 66% of illegal immigrants pay Social Security, Medicare and income taxes via payroll withholding
