That’s the country we love. Clear-eyed. Big
hearted. Optimistic that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the
final word. That’s what makes me so hopeful about our future. Because of you, I
believe in you. That’s why I stand here confident that the State of our Union
is strong!
Despite misleading poll readings by FOXified Republican and mainstream media outlets, realclearpolitics.com poll of polls averages reflect that President Obama's actual job approval ratings are at 86.7% among Democrats, 54% among Independents and it's Republicans that, not surprisingly, poll the President low!
So, while 2016 Republican presidential candidates’, Republican congressional lawmakers’(???),
FOXified Republican and mainstream media
pundits’ spread
the GOP's gloom and doom fallacy of the
state of the union, it is no surprise that President Obama’s final State of the Union Address is consistent with the majority of Americans' view that the state of the union is strong under the President's leadership!
Throughout his Address, President Obama focused on present and future optimistic measures related to four big questions. (Full Address content appears in the links below.)
How do we give everyone a fair shot at
opportunity and security in this new economy?
How do we make technology work for us and
not against us- especially when it comes to solving urgent challenges like
climate change?
How do we keep America safe and lead the
world without becoming its policeman?
How can we make our politics reflect what’s
best in us and not what’s worst?
Here are the highlights from the President's Address.
Here are the highlights from the President's Address.
Regarding the economy, President Obama reminded us that America has
the
strongest, most durable economy in the world with the longest streak
of private sector job creation in history; more that 14 million new jobs; the
strongest two years of job growth since the 90’s; an unemployment rate cut in
half; an auto industry with its best year ever; manufacturing creating 900,000
new jobs in the past six years, and deficits cut by almost three-quarters.
The President’s hope for the
future is bipartisan reform to
insure the opportunity for Americans to get the education and training they
need to make college more affordable, be lifted out of poverty and land
good-paying jobs commensurate with global economic trends toward technology and
automation wherein workers have less leverage with companies that have less
loyalty to their communities and more and more wealth and income concentrated
at the very top.
Regarding technological innovations, the President reminded us that
over the past seven years, we’ve protected the open Internet; taken bold new
steps to get more students and low-income Americans online; led a 200 nation agreement to address climate change; cut imports of
foreign oil by nearly sixty percent; and reduced gas prices to under two bucks
per gallon.
The President’s hope for the
future regarding innovations is bipartisan reform to change
the way we manage our oil and coal resources so they better reflect the cuts
they impose on taxpayers and our planet; to accelerate the transition away from
dirty energy, and to put money back into communities, and to put tens of
thousands of Americans to work building a 21st century
transportation system.
Regarding national security and leading the world, the President
reminded us that the
United States of America is the most powerful nation on Earth. That America has led more than 60 countries to cut off
ISIL’s financing, disrupt their plots, and stop the flow of terrorist fighters.
That with nearly 10,000 air strikes we are taking out their leadership, their
oil, their training camps, and their weapons. That Osama Bin Laden was brought
to justice, the leader of al Qaeda in Yemen was taken out and the perpetrator
of the Benghazi attacks sits in a prison cell. That the U.S. built a global
coalition with sanctions and principled diplomacy to prevent a nuclear-armed
Iran. That we forged a Trans-Pacific
Partnership to open markets and protect workers and the environment. That we led
nearly 200 nations to the most ambitious agreement in history to fight climate
change. That we
stopped the spread of Ebola in South Africa, and that when it comes to
every important international issue, people of the world do not look to Beijing
or Moscow to lead - they call us.
The President’s hope for the
future regarding security is bipartisan reform to lead by the
power of example towards a vote by the Republican Congress to demonstrate that our country is unified towards defeating ISIL; ending the scourge of HIV/AIDS, finding a
cure for cancer, issuing a wise application of
military power that doesn't drag us into nation-building wars similar to Vietnam and Iraq, and helping African countries feed their people and care for
the sick in order to prevent the next pandemic from reaching our shores.
Regarding making our politics reflect what’s best in us and not what’s
worst, the President reminded us to reject any politics that targets people
because of race or religion reminding us that when politicians insult Muslims,
when a mosque is vandalized or a kid is bullied, that doesn’t make us safer, it diminishes
us in the eyes of the world.
The President’s hope for the
future regarding politics is bipartisan reform and the
power of OUR vote to
end the practice of drawing our congressional districts so that politicians can
pick their voters and not the other way around. Bipartisan reform and the power of OUR vote to
reduce the influence of money in politics so that a handful of families and
hidden interest can’t bankroll our elections. Bipartisan reform and the power of OUR vote to reduce the
influence of money and power to gain control over the decisions that could send
a young soldier to war, or allow another economic disaster, or roll back the
equal rights and voting rights that generations of Americans have fought, even
died to secure.
