According to an article published at constitution.laws.com entitled An
Overview of the 2nd Amendment, the Second Amendment is a part of
the Bill of Rights, which are the first 10 Amendments to the United States Constitution.
The Bill of Rights were proposed and
sent to the states by the first session of the First Congress. They were
ratified on December 15, 1791.”
The Second Amendment reads
as follows:
A well regulated
Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the
people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.
After reading the Second Amendment, we had two major questions:
- Where is the well regulated Militia hiding?
- Why would anybody need to keep and bear a 100 clip assault weapon to kill a rabbit in the middle of a deserted cabbage patch?
We thought we might be able to find the answers to our questions
after further research on the assault weapon controversy, but it only left us with more questions…
Say what?
One day after the NRA leadership and other gun ownership groups met
with Vice President Biden as part of on-going talks on gun violence prevention,
the president of the NRA, Mr. Lapierre, predicted “Congress will not pass a ban
on military-style, so called assault weapons in the wake of the school shootings
last month in Newtown, Connecticut”(?!?!) That ignorant
and insensitive statement seemed to open
the floodgates of assault weapon Tea Partied
politicos, FOXifiers, and other hot
heads blasting the airways with threats of a militaristic takeover of the
government(?!?!?); idiotic suggestions to end gun violence with gun violence(?!?!), and lies that the President wants to take
away their guns and second amendment rights.
How's life treating you on that Newt moon colony?
A recent article in the New
York Daily News states “thirty-four Americans are killed every day by firearms. The total killed in just 6 months is equal to
all American combat deaths over the
entire length of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars”!
Are you familiar with the phrase "read my lips"?
A USA Today Gallup Poll
found that 1) 58 percent of Americans say they favor stricter gun law; 2) 47 percent favor passing new
legislation over merely enforcing existing laws; 3) 92 percent support requiring background checks to buy weapons at
gun shows and 4) 62 percent favor a
ban on high-capacity magazines that can carry up to 30 bullets.
In conclusion, one thing we found in our most recent research really
made us cheer! Shortly after the deadly shootings in Newton, Connecticut, we wrote
a post entitled Save A Life: Take a Stand Against Assault Weapons.
Within the post we mentioned that we only found 3 “ban assault weapon” petition websites
in contrast to pages upon pages of
petitions to not ban assault
weapons. Here’s what we found in today’s research…
