The GOP Debt Ceiling Solution: Let the Sequester Fester

The Tea Partied fiscal cliff battle resumes in March, 2013 when the reality of sequestration sinks in.  How important do you think sequestration is to Boehner’s Tea Partied House representatives?

Obviously not that important since Boehner  has, once again, called for a House vacation in the wake of a fiscal crisis – previous Boehner fiscal crisis House vacations have lasted up to 5 weeks!  This time Boehner called for a 10 day  vacation for his representatives just three days prior to sequestration deliberations!

What is sequestration?
According to an article at politico.com “Simply put it’s the formal term for mandatory cuts to federal programs – the process of cordoning off money that may have been authorized by Congress, but is now prohibited from being spent. Literally, the money is being “sequestered” – taken away from the federal agencies affected.”

How did the sequester come about?
When the government was approaching its August, 2012 debt ceiling limit which needed to be raised through a congressional vote or the country would default, Democratic congressional members were in favor of a “clean” vote without strings attached, but Tea Partied Republicans demanded substantial cuts in social programs in exchange for raising the debt limit. (Keep in mind that – prior to Obama’s presidency - Republicans haven’t always been against raising the debt limit.  See what we’re talking about in the related link below.)

President Obama and congressional leaders ultimately agreed  to the BCA which would allow the debt ceiling to be raised in exchange for the establishment of a Super Committee tied to the enforcement of a sequester as a fall-back. We all know how that turned out -  the Super Committee’s recommendations were sent to file 13 and our nation’s credit rating was downgraded from triple A to –A.

How would sequestered cuts affect the country?
According to an article at washingtonpost.com, “Many defense officials have warned that the cuts will lead the military to be “hollowed out”. Democratic legislators, similarly, warned about cuts on vital social programs including Medicare and Social Security, and defense, health care and other industries that are significantly dependent on federal spending will suffer major job losses.

How can the sequester be avoided?
Congress must pass a budget deal that would achieve at least $1.2 trillion in deficit reductions without any strings attached.
