Election Day 2013 – Good news beyond the headlines!


The Headlines: New York, New Jersey and Virginia
Progressive, Bill de Blasio was elected Mayor of New York with a strong message signalling the electorate’s determination to reject conservative-based economic barriers against the poor.

Governor Chris Christie swept to a landslide re-election in New Jersey, but constituents also voted to reject Christie's bid to block raising the minimum wage.

Progressive Terry McAuliffe beat Tea Partied favorite Ken Cuccinelli for the Virginia governor’s race even after Cuccinelli pulled out the Tea Partied, race-baiting Obama card towards the end of his campaign.

Good news beyond the headlines...
Progressive Annise D. Parker won her third and final term for Houston’s mayoral race amidst a state where a Tea Partied governor, Tea Partied attorney general and Tea Partied state legislators persists in taking away voting rights and women’s reproductive rights.

Progressive Kasim Reed won the Atlanta mayor’s race surviving as one of the nation’s few remaining black mayors in a major city.

Progressive Martin Walsh won the Boston mayor’s race with a coalition of supporters across race, ideology and background signaling that the fight for fair labor practices is making a comeback.

Progressive Bill Peduto won the Pittsburgh major’s race over Tea Partied favorite Josh Wander with a campaign focused on reinvesting in troubled communities.

Progressive Ed Murray won the Seattle Mayor’s race becoming the first openly gay major in the city.

Republican Bradley Byrne defeated Tea Partied favorite Dean Young in the Alabama primary run off.

With nearly all of the votes counted it looks like fracking restrictions prevailed in three of four Colorado communities.

15-17 year olds "hopped in line" to vote in Takoma – the first city in the United States to lower its voting age from 18 to 16

Voters in six of 11 affected conservative rural Colorado counties voted down a proposal to secede from the state.

An Emily’s List e-mail dated November 6, 2013  at 7:45 PM reported huge strides for women candidates - six women state legislative seats and five women city council seats across the country.
