During President Obama's 2015 State of the Union
Address, he presented a proposal for Middle Class Economics wherein everyone gets their
fair shot, everyone does their fair share and everyone plays by the same set of
rules.
Now Trump and his fellow 2016 Republican presidential candidates are giving lip service to President Obama's Middle Class Economics agenda, but...
...the Republican Congress responded with a flood
of the following anti-jobs, anti-economic growth, and anti-fair taxation bills:
- Have the middle
class fund tax cuts for the wealthy and
corporations
- Afford oil companies with more tax subsidies
- Defund Obamacare (for the 56th time)
- Allow a foreign oil company
to take American farmers’ land by eminent domain
- Eliminate overtime pay
- Cut federal programs affecting infants,
children, women, veterans, senior citizens and the disabled
- Cut support for public schools
- Promote funding for charter schools to pad
corporate pockets
- Block government regulations of oil companies
and carbon pollution
- Spending cuts on maintaining our infrastructure
and scientific research,
- Cut regulations that protect people and the
environment from being harm by corporations seeking profit
- Block legislation to maintain infrastructure
e.g. roads bridges
- Block legislation to hire teachers
- Block legislation to raise the minimum wage
- Block legislation to give equal pay for women
- Block student loan relief
- Block relief for the long-term unemployed
- Block the stoppage of tax breaks for outsourcing American jobs overseas
During his Address, President Obama outlined specific steps the Republican Congress can take to make Middle Class Economics a reality.
- Pass a law that makes sure a woman is paid the same as a man for doing the same work.
- Pass a law to raise the minimum wage stating: If you truly believe you could work full time and support a family on less than $15,000 a year, go try it. If not, vote to give millions of the hardest-working people in America a raise.
- Pass a law to protect voting rights [currently being challenged by conservative Supreme Court justices’ decision to deny voting rights].
- Pass legislation giving working families a fair shot by passing laws that strengthen rather than weaken unions, and give American workers a voice.
- Close loopholes so we stop rewarding companies that keep profits abroad, and reward those that invest in America.
- Close loopholes that lead to inequality by allowing one percent to avoid paying taxes on their accumulated wealth.
- Use loophole money to help more families make quality childcare more available and more affordable providing every middle class and low income family with young children in America a new tax cut of up to $3,000 per child per year.
- Use loophole money to send young, older, single parent and veterans to college using Tennessee – a state with Republican leadership and Chicago – a city with Democratic leadership – as models for a chance to graduate from a two year community college free of debt.
- Help families afford health care, a home with lower mortgage premiums, and retirement.
- Help states adopt paid leave laws of their own giving every worker in America the opportunity to earn seven days of paid sick leave.
