While I was researching sources for my next post on the facts versus myths about the Affordable Care Act and Medicare, I came across some really weird “sources” that blew my mind. The sources had pretty legitimate-sounding titles, but their message was filled with lies and half-truths. Not wanting to jump to conclusions, I Googled the titles of the organizations and found that they were Right Wing agenda “think tanks” that were, actually, "PR firms for those who want to obscure the facts about health care in America.” (physicians for a national health program - pnhp.org)
Right Wing “think tanks” are not only aimed at knocking health care reform. Right Wing pundits and media outlets throw out the names of fake think tank “PR firms” whenever they want to make it look like their lies and half-truths are backed by legitimate sources regardless of topic.
The situation is becoming more and more obvious on right wing and main stream media outlets whether or not the Right Wingers are the interviewers or the interviewees, but FOXifiers have got it down pat. It’s almost comical to watch. As soon as their lies and half-truths are challenged by a non-FOXified guest, they throw out the name of one of their fake think tanks to make the viewers think that they know the facts and their guest doesn’t. Here’s an example:
FOXifier: Have you heard of the Pigs Fly Foundation?
GUEST: No, I haven’t
FOXifier (nearly jumping out of his/her seat with glee) “You really should read the latest report from the Pigs Fly Foundation entitled “The Affordable Care Act cuts $700 Billion from Medicare” to get the facts.”!?!?!
GUEST: Well, according to a report by...
FOXifer: Sorry, we've gotta leave it there. And now a word from our sponsors!
FOXifer: Sorry, we've gotta leave it there. And now a word from our sponsors!
Check it out for yourselves while I finish researching and composing my next post on Health Care/Medicare facts versus myths. I'm learning some interesting points about the myth/fact issue. I hope you will too!
