The GOP’s latest filibuster victim was President Obama’s Secretary of Defense nominee, Chuck Hagel.
Four years ago, Chuck Hagel served as a Republican Senator from Nebraska. Hagel is, also, a decorated Vietnam War veteran, and he was wounded serving as an enlisted combat soldier.
So, what could Tea Partied Republicans possibly have against his nomination? Could it be that 1) he was nominated by President Obama; 2) he had the guts to break ranks and “oppose former President George W. Bush’s handling of the Iraq war” or all of the above?
You won’t believe the excuses, distortions and
contortions Tea Partied Republicans went through to stonewall Hagel’s
nomination.
Despite the fact that Tea Partied
Republicans a) failed to disclose that they cut diplomatic corps
funding prior to the Benghazi attack; b) couldn’t come up with any
legitimate justifications for crucifying prospective Secretary of State Susan
Rice, and c) were, rightfully, put in
their place when they tried to crucify Former Secretary of State Clinton, they used Benghazi information-gathering as an excuse to stonewall Hagel when Hagel
“had nothing to do with the attack in Benghazi”! (huffingtonpost.com)
Wait - it gets even nuttier, Tea
Partied Republican Congress members tried so hard to justify the unjustifiable that they actually made up stuff to stonewall Hagel!
According to an article at thinkprogress.org entitled How an Over-The Top Joke Became a Republican
Talking Point Against Chuck Hagel!, a journalist with the New York Daily
News came forward as the unintentional source for a “rumor that Secretary of Defense nominee Chuck Hagel was
receiving funding from the non-existent
“Friends of Hamas” group and the, equally, non-existent
“Junior League of Hezbollah in France”.
Right wing media zealots and Tea
Partied Republican congressmen went Foolhardy Gone Wild with the rumors. Members
of the right-wing blogosphere – starting with Breibart News salivated in spreading the “Friends of Hamas” rumor. FOXifier Lou Dobbs and National Review columnist Andrew McCarthy “brought up the mythical
group as an example of what might be lurking in Hagel’s history”(?!?!?) Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz
lobbied claims “without evidence – that Hagel had received money from the
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and North Korea that he was hiding from the Senate
Armed Services Committee”(?!?!) Kentucky
Republican Senator Rand Paul elaborated
on his endless supply of outrageous
and unsubstantiated outbursts stating the
“the “Friends of Hamas” was just part of a string of new information that was
more and more concerning”(!?!?)
Even after diehard Tea Party Senators
knew that - despite their filibuster tactics - there were, finally,
enough votes to pass Hagel through on February 25th, 15 of them "insisted that President Obama withdraw Hagel’s nomination”! (nytimes.com)
The names of the 15 Senators appear below ….
John Cornyn of Texas
Lindsey Graham of South Carolina
Tim Scott of South Carolina
Roiger Wicker of Mississippi
David Vitter of Louisiana
Ted Cruz of Texas
Mike Lee of Utah
